Relevance vs. Authority

These terms are often used interchangeably when in fact they are quite different. Your relevance is how important your content is deemed to be by search engines with regards to the user’s search query. Relevance can be organically achieved, but it’s helped along by use of keywords that users are likely to be searching for.

Authority is how much search engines trust your site, essentially. The biggest factor in increasing authority is getting inbound links to your site.

Domain Authority vs. Page Authority

Domain authority is with regards to your entire site, and like mentioned, inbound links are the most important factor in how you score. The thing to note here is that both quality and quantity matter. That is, the number of inbound links, and the authority of those they come from. Higher domain authority for your site results in better ranking for every page on the domain.

Page authority is the same thing applied to one page in particular. Each page receives its own individual score based on its inbound links.

On-site optimization is a catch-all term for the many techniques you can use to pretty up your website for search engines. This involves things like tweaking titles on your site and the meta descriptions of your pages using keywords, streamlining the code used on your site so it’s easier to index, and ensuring that every page has the right amount of content that is together relevant and useful to users.

Link building is the process of getting inbound links to your site from high-authority sources. A tactic many employ is guest posting on other sites, this gives your brand more exposure while also driving traffic to you and getting you inbound links, all in one. Link building can also be done by reaching out to trusted sites and convincing them to link to yours.
